The chemistry, briefly
Cannabis does not produce THC. It produces THCa — an acidic precursor with an extra carboxyl group (COOH) hanging off the molecule. That group is bulky enough to stop THCa from fitting neatly into the CB1 receptors in your brain, which is why raw flower juiced into a smoothie will not get you high. Apply heat and the group leaves as carbon dioxide. What remains is delta-9 THC. Chemists call this decarboxylation; you call it lighting a joint, hitting a vape, or baking a tray of cookies.
Conversion is not perfect. Roughly 87.7% of THCa's mass survives as THC, which is where the industry's 0.877 multiplier comes from. Time and UV light do the same job slowly, which is why poorly stored flower loses potency and gains a harsher, sedative edge as THC degrades into CBN.

Why the legal status differs
Federal hemp law measures delta-9 THC by dry weight: 0.3% or less and the plant is hemp. THCa is not delta-9 THC, so a flower can test at 24% THCa, 0.2% delta-9, and still meet the federal definition — even though it behaves like high-THC cannabis once you burn it. A growing number of states have closed that gap by regulating total THC instead, so THCa flower that is shippable in one state may be restricted in the next. Effects and dosing

Is THCa the same as THC?
No. THCa is the raw, acidic precursor found in living cannabis. It is non-intoxicating until heat removes its carboxyl group and converts it into delta-9 THC, the compound responsible for the high.
Does THCa get you high?
Not on its own. Eaten raw, THCa is non-intoxicating. Once you smoke, vape or bake it, decarboxylation converts most of it into THC and the effects are the same as any high-THC product.
Is THCa legal?
Federally, hemp is defined by its delta-9 THC content — 0.3% or less by dry weight. THCa flower can meet that definition while still testing high in THCa, which is why state laws differ. Several states regulate total THC instead, making THCa flower restricted there.
